Presbyterian Preschool

The Presbyterian Preschool is an extension of the mission
of Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church. In fulfilling the
commandment of Jesus, "Let the children come to me and
do not hinder them," the Preschool affirms a respect for the
dignity and value of each child as a unique creation of God.
Childhood is a time when young children discover concepts
about their world and develop concern for others in a caring
atmosphere that is supportive, nurturing, and responsive to
their individual needs. In order for their education to be effective,
children must be provided with the kinds of opportunities that
are appropriate to their interests and their levels of development.
Parents are respected as the most important providers of care
and nurturing of young children. The Church unites with the
parents and the Preschool Staff in fulfilling this mission.

Our Objectives . . .

  • To provide quality education for preschool aged children.
  • To provide developmentally appropriate opportunities
for children to engage in open exploration, problem
solving, and critical thinking that will enrich and
    enhance their natural development.
  • To ensure a learning environment that allows young
children to become confident and to enjoy successes
in a caring atmosphere that is supportive, nurturing,
and responsive to their individual needs.

Our Goals . . .

  • To foster positive self-concept and attitude toward
learning, self control and a sense of belonging.
  • To encourage children to think, reason, question and experiment.
  • To develop social and emotional skills.
  • To provide opportunities for fine and gross motor development.
  • To encourage and demonstrate sound health,
    safety and nutritional practices.
  • To respect cultural diversity and anti-bias.
  • To provide experiences which promote creativity
and aesthetic appreciation of the arts.
  • To encourage development in the areas of reading,
writing, mathematics, science and social studies based
on the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards.

ABOUT OUR DAY. . .

Children are active constructors of knowledge. At this age they
do this best through play. We strive to make the children feel
safe and comfortable in their surroundings so they’re free to
explore and participate in our carefully planned environment.
Children are introduced to a variety of materials throughout
the year that allow for both repetitive play and new challenges.
Our curriculum exposes children to and encourages the
development of pre-kindergarten skills.

The children's day consists of time for:

  • Choice – where they are free to move about the
    learning centers in the classroom
  • Group time - a gathering of the children and teachers
which provides an opportunity for children to feel a sense
of community while sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings.
Group time also enables the teacher to introduce an activity,
    read a story, songs, etc.
  • Snack time - a nutritious snack with juice or milk is
    provided each day
  • Large muscle activity - on our large, fenced,
well-equipped playground or in the fellowship hall
  • Weekly special music experience

We welcome visitors during the school day –
please call, we look forward to seeing you!

ABOUT OUR STAFF

Presbyterian Preschool teachers have degrees or special early
childhood experience. All of our staff maintain current status,
with ongoing training in the early childhood field. The director
and teachers are all members of NAEYC (National Association
for the Education of Young Children) and its Ohio and
Cincinnati affiliates.

Presbyterian Preschool is licensed by the State of Ohio and
the city of Cincinnati.  In 2007, we were recognized as a
Two Star Step Up to Quality Center
- one of the highest
awards for excellence in the care of young children.
This recognition is only awarded to the finest centers
in Ohio, those that surpass Ohio's licensing standards
and offer a program that emphasizes early learning
and education.

CLASSES FOR THE 2008-2009 YEAR

All classes have one teacher and an assistant.
Our one-day classes have 10 children. We try to
maintain 15 children in our two-day classes and
16 children in our 3, 4 and 5-day classes.

The 3,4 and 5-day classes are available to children
who are eligible for kindergarten the following year,
with the exception of the Wednesday/Thursday/Friday
PM class. This class is a multilevel class of 3 year olds
and young 4 year olds. The 2-day classes are for
3-4 year olds, although the majority of these children
are two years away from kindergarten. The kindergarten
cut off date is September 30 for most school districts in
our area. The 1 day class is for children who turned 2 by
March 15. If there are unfilled openings in these classes
during the school year, we may consider children of a
slightly younger age. Children in the 1 day program may be
in diapers - all other children need to be potty trained.

  • 5-Day – Monday – Friday 1:00 – 3:30pm
  • 4-Day – Monday – Thursday 1:00 – 3:30pm

Our program starts in September and ends before Memorial Day.
We follow Forest Hills Schools for most vacations, holidays
and snow days.

You will receive a letter from the teacher in mid August.
We transition the children into our environment gradually.
Each family will have an opportunity to come in and meet
the teachers just prior to school starting. We will start the
children over a 2 day period, so that only 1/2 the class is
there on your child's first day. The one day program will
come for one hour on the first day.
